How it works
BMI is weight divided by height squared. In metric units: BMI = kg ÷ (height in meters)². In imperial units, a 703 conversion factor is used so height can stay in inches: BMI = (lbs ÷ (height in inches)²) × 703.
The result is categorized using the standard bands: under 18.5 is underweight, 18.5–24.9 is normal weight, 25–29.9 is overweight, and 30 or above is obese. The gauge below shows exactly where your number falls within those bands, on a 15–40 display range that covers underweight through well into obese.

Is BMI an accurate measure of health?
BMI is a simple screening ratio, not a diagnosis. It doesn't distinguish muscle mass from fat mass, so athletes and very muscular people can score 'overweight' despite low body fat. It's widely used because it's easy to calculate from just height and weight, not because it's precise for every individual.
