Running Pace Calculator

Calculate running pace (minutes per km or mile) and average speed from a distance and finish time, in metric or imperial units.

Pace (min:sec / km)
5:00 /km
Average speed (km/h)
12

How it works

Pace is simply total time divided by distance, and average speed is distance divided by time (scaled to a per-hour rate): pace = time ÷ distance, speed = distance ÷ (time ÷ 3600 seconds). Both come out in whatever distance unit you entered — kilometers or miles — since this is a plain ratio, not a formula with unit-specific constants.

Switching the Metric/Imperial toggle relabels and rescales the distance field (e.g. 5 km becomes ≈3.1 mi) so the same real-world run is preserved; the pace and speed results simply follow whichever unit the distance is now in.

FAQ

Why enter time as hours, minutes, and seconds instead of one number?

Race and workout times are almost always read and reported as H:MM:SS (or MM:SS for shorter distances), so splitting entry into three fields avoids converting in your head before typing — the calculator adds them up internally.
