Body Frame Size Calculator (Wrist Method)
Estimate your skeletal frame size — small, medium, or large — from your height-to-wrist-circumference ratio, in metric (cm) or imperial (in) units.
- Height ÷ wrist ratio
- 10.29
- Estimated frame size
- Medium frame
Where this falls
10.3 falls in the "Medium frame" range.
How it works
This uses the commonly cited height-to-wrist-circumference ratio method for estimating skeletal frame size: ratio = height ÷ wrist circumference. Wrist circumference is used as the reference measurement because the wrist is mostly bone and tendon, with comparatively little fat or muscle to distort the reading the way a waist or hip measurement can.
The ratio is banded into small/medium/large using commonly published sex-specific thresholds: for men, a ratio above 10.4 indicates a small frame, 9.6–10.4 a medium frame, and below 9.6 a large frame; for women, the cutoffs are 10.9 and 9.9. Women have lower thresholds than men because, at the same height, a wrist that's relatively thicker in proportion to height is more typical for women than for men.
Because the ratio is height ÷ wrist — two measurements in the same unit — it comes out identical whether both are entered in centimeters or both in inches, the same way this site's waist-to-hip ratio needs no internal unit conversion.
FAQ
Why does frame size matter?
Frame size is sometimes used alongside height and weight to judge whether a weight is reasonable for someone's build — a person with a naturally larger skeletal frame can carry more bone and muscle mass at a 'healthy' weight than a small-framed person of the same height. It's a rough screening estimate, not a diagnostic measurement.
Where exactly should I measure my wrist?
Measure around the wrist just distal to (below) the wrist bone, where the wrist is at its narrowest, with the tape snug but not compressing the skin. A looser or higher measurement will read larger than your actual wrist size and can shift the result toward a smaller estimated frame.
