How it works

The Cooper test (Cooper, 1968) is a field method for estimating VO2 max — the maximum rate of oxygen your body can use during intense exercise, a standard measure of cardiovascular fitness — from a single 12-minute maximal-effort run, no lab equipment required. It uses the original published linear regression relating distance covered to lab-measured VO2 max: VO2max (ml/kg/min) = (distance in meters − 504.9) ÷ 44.73.

Distance is entered in kilometers or miles depending on the unit toggle and converted to meters internally before the formula runs, since the published coefficients are calibrated for meters.

The test protocol matters for the estimate to mean anything: it assumes maximal, sustained effort for the full 12 minutes on a flat, consistent surface — pacing yourself conservatively or stopping early will understate your actual fitness level.
