3D Print Filament Weight & Cost Calculator

Calculate 3D printer filament weight and material cost from its length (or the length remaining from a known weight), diameter, and material density.

Length

Weight

Volume
24.05 cm³
Estimated material cost
$0.6

How it works

Filament is manufactured as a cylinder, so its volume follows the standard cylinder formula: volume = π × (diameter ÷ 2)² × length. Multiplying that volume by the material's density converts it directly to a weight, and dividing weight by density and back through the same cross-section recovers length instead — so this calculator solves in either direction depending on whether you know the length (e.g. from a slicer's estimate) or the weight (e.g. what's left on a partial spool).

Material density is a plain, editable input rather than a hardcoded fact, since it varies by brand and blend even within the same material — the default (1.24 g/cm³) is PLA's commonly published figure, with PETG around 1.27, ABS around 1.04, and TPU around 1.21 as reference points to swap in.

Cost is simply the computed weight, converted to kilograms, times whatever you pay per kilogram — a number only you know, not looked up, since filament pricing varies by seller and changes over time.

FAQ

Why is there no metric/imperial toggle for the diameter or length?

3D printing filament is sold and measured in millimeters and grams worldwide by convention — 1.75mm and 2.85mm are the two standard diameters everywhere, regardless of which country you're in — so there's no imperial variant to convert to or from, the same reasoning this site applies to other domain-standard units like rowing ergometer splits or lab molarity.

Why don't my slicer's estimated grams match this exactly?

Slicers usually already know your specific filament's measured density (sometimes tuned per spool) and can also model extrusion multiplier/flow-rate settings; this calculator uses the density you enter, so matching your slicer exactly just means entering the same density it's using.
