Rowing Split & Power Calculator

Convert between an indoor rower's 500m split time and power output in watts, using the standard ergometer pace-to-power formula.

Split (per 500m)
2:00.0 /500m
Power
202.5 W
Equivalent pace (per 1000m)
4:00.0 /1000m

How it works

Indoor rowing ergometers relate pace and power with a fixed cubic formula: watts = 2.80 ÷ p³, where p is the pace in seconds per meter (the 500m split time divided by 500). This is the same relationship Concept2 publishes and its PM5 monitor uses internally to convert between the two.

Because power scales with the cube of pace, equal improvements in split time cost very different amounts of power depending on how fast you're already going: dropping 10 seconds off a slow split costs far less power than dropping the same 10 seconds off an already-fast one.

The formula inverts cleanly to solve for split from a known power instead: splitSeconds = 500 × (2.80 ÷ watts)^(1/3). Pick whichever quantity you know and the calculator solves for the other.

FAQ

Why is the relationship cubic instead of linear?

The power needed to move a boat (or the ergometer's flywheel) through water/air scales with the cube of velocity, since the drag force itself scales with velocity squared and power is force times velocity. That's why a small pace improvement demands a disproportionately larger jump in power output.

Does this only work for 2000m races?

No — the formula is defined entirely in terms of pace per 500m, independent of race distance, so it converts between split and watts the same way whether you're pacing a 2k, a 5k, or a steady-state piece of any length.
