Recipe Scaling Calculator

Scale any ingredient quantity up or down when changing a recipe's serving count — multiply by the ratio of desired servings to original servings.

How it works

Scaling a recipe is a single ratio: the scale factor is desired servings ÷ original servings, and every ingredient quantity multiplies by that same factor. A recipe that serves 4 and needs to serve 6 scales by 6 ÷ 4 = 1.5x, so 2 cups of an ingredient becomes 2 × 1.5 = 3 cups.

This is deliberately unit-agnostic — the 'quantity' field can be cups, grams, a count of eggs, or anything else your recipe measures in, since the ratio between servings is what matters, not what's being measured. Run each ingredient through the calculator separately using the same original/desired servings to scale a whole recipe.

FAQ

Does this work for every ingredient in a recipe, like salt and leavening?

The math is linear scaling, which is accurate for most ingredients, but real cooking isn't perfectly linear for everything — salt, spices, and leavening agents (baking powder, baking soda, yeast) often need less than a straight multiple when a recipe is scaled up a lot, and cooking/baking time doesn't scale by the same factor as quantity at all. Treat the scaled quantity as a precise starting point, and taste or adjust leavening and seasoning for large scale-ups.
