555 Timer Monostable Pulse Width Calculator

Calculate the output pulse width of a 555 timer wired in monostable (one-shot) mode from its timing resistor and capacitor values.

Output pulse width
109.8612 ms
Pulse width (µs)
109,861.2 µs

How it works

In monostable ("one-shot") mode, a trigger pulse starts the 555's timing capacitor charging from 0V toward the supply rail through a single resistor R. The output stays high until the capacitor crosses 2/3 of the supply voltage, at which point the internal comparator flips the output back low and discharges the capacitor, ready for the next trigger. The time to charge from 0V to exactly 2/3 of the rail works out to ln(3) × R × C — the standard NE555 monostable derivation found in the TI/Fairchild datasheets.

Datasheets commonly round ln(3) ≈ 1.0986 up to the quick rule of thumb "T = 1.1RC"; this calculator uses the exact ln(3) rather than that rounded constant, so the result is slightly more precise than the rule-of-thumb figure most references quote.

This is the direct one-shot counterpart to this site's 555 Timer Astable calculator, which covers the free-running oscillator mode (continuous frequency and duty cycle) instead of a single timed pulse.

FAQ

Why ln(3) instead of the "1.1" most guides use?

1.1 is just ln(3) ≈ 1.0986 rounded up slightly for a safety margin in real circuits (component tolerances mean the actual capacitor or resistor value is rarely exact). This calculator computes the precise theoretical value instead, since it's working from your exact entered values rather than nominal component tolerances.

Does this calculator account for how the pulse gets re-triggered?

No — it only computes the pulse width for a single trigger event assuming the capacitor starts fully discharged at 0V, which is the standard monostable formula. A 555 in re-triggerable monostable mode that receives a new trigger before the pulse ends will restart the timing period, extending the output, but that depends on the trigger timing itself rather than R and C alone.
